Anja MaraisAnja Marais's work is deeply tied to her birthplace in South Africa and memories of her early childhood there. This piece, "The Woman that Was Changed into a Tree", loosely illustrates an eerie South African folk tale that tells a story of rape, ostracization of the victim by her community, revenge and redemption. This weighty story takes the form of lighter-than-air paper dresses that seem to float off the ground. Female imagery often appears in Marais's work, and the suggested presence and absence of the woman who would inhabit these dresses adds an additional tension to the piece. Marais lives in Key West, FL.
