Matthew SpahrMatthew Spahr's installation "Big Gun or a Man Cannot Live Like a Man" takes place in the two gun mounts at the West Martello Tower. Every aspect of this installation is theatrically intentional, from the placement of the coconuts to the color of the thread used to bind the ropes. Like constructing a sentence, Spahr references naval history with a collection of nouns: a cannon, gold, coal, belaying pins, flags, a Key Lime tree (to prevent scurvy, of course), coconuts to provide nourishment, old wood, highly polished wood, etc. While not exactly giving the viewer the literal story, we are asked to construct the meaning from his richly layered elements. His title perhaps references a tongue-in-cheek nostalgia for the male-dominated culture of a bygone era. The artist lives in Richmond, VA.
